ABOUT THE PROJECT
Inside the Vilnius Ghetto: A Virtual Musical Tour is an interactive project launched by the
Vilnius-based ARTyn Mixed Choir. In the Lithuanian context, such interdisciplinary idea is unique.
It brings together choral and instrumental music, video, photography,
historical narratives and archive documents.
The tour gets you back to the 1940s, the time when almost all the Jews of Vilnius were relocated to the Ghetto. The project also offers a selection of traditional and new Jewish music performed by
the ARTyn Chamber Choir and Darius Bagdonavičius on violin and accordion.
The virtual tour also features 360-degree photography, video, archive images, and illustration
to experience the many layers of the cultural life within the Ghetto.
Usually the Ghetto is remembered as a place of tragic Holocaust memories, yet it also speaks of life and hope, however ephemeral. The life that is best revealed through the Ghetto’s cultural heritage, such as music, books, theatre, and architecture. And, indeed, the stories of the people behind it.
By introducing the tour, the ARTyn Chamber Choir wants to preserve this tragic – and not yet
that distant – part of Vilnius history. On the other hand, the project is aimed at
the dissemination of Jewish culture and history.
